Problem

Breweries face high annual costs using third-party software to manage their production. To address this, the Omnia project was initiated. A unique platform that unifies different contexts of beer production, from brewing to packaging.

High-Level Objectives

The platform needs to be scalable to accommodate any context.

The MVP will initially focus on the Performance context, assisting in the management and categorization of downtimes in the brewing process.

In 2023, after the launch, the Orders context will be introduced.

In 2024, the contexts of Packaging, Filtration, and Process Hygienewill be added.

Challenges

The MVP was developed to solve the problems of breweries in South America (SAZ).

After the launch in Brazil, a brewery in North America (NAZ) showed interest, turning the product into a global tool. This required strategic adjustments to ensure the tool's functionality globally.

Process

Creation of Visual Identity

The visual identity was developed based on the concept of the dialectical spiral, representing continuous evolution and constant improvement.

Process

Visual Explorations and User Iterations

The first module was BMS (Brewery Management System). It is responsible for logging and categorizing downtimes during the brewing process.

Various visual explorations and usability test sessions were conducted with users to ensure the interface was intuitive and effective.

After validating the iterations, the interface was handed off to the development team, ensuring all specifications and feedback from the tests were incorporated.

Process

Development of the New Navigation

With the arrival of new contexts, it was necessary to design a new navigation. The navigation provided by the existing design system would not suffice to meet the required levels to accommodate the new contexts.

From this point, the design team grew, and the contexts were divided between two designers:

I handled Performance (BMS and Packaging)

Rebecca Dantas handled Orders and Cleaning Process

Navigation: I began the studies and created the concept for the new navigation. Rebecca contributed valuable design insights, usability testing, and handoff.

Results

Omnia's MVP was successfully launched, meeting the needs of SAZ breweries.

The downtimes categorization rate in the brewing process improved from 1.52 to 10.20% between July-August 2023.

With global interest, the platform is being adjusted to work effectively in different zones and stands out for its scalability and consistency in user experience.

Learnings

Understanding the brewery's brewing process was challenging. I spent over a week in meetings with the PM and architect.

I am very proud of the new navigation because it will be part of not only Omnia but the entire design system of Ambev Tech. The challenge was to figure out how to incorporate multi-levels that could support any context (from supply to logistics).

Communication with Rebecca (product designer from Orders and Process Hygiene) was essential for the success of our deliveries. Since we worked in different contexts, we needed to be constantly aligned to ensure a consistent experience on the platform. Our communication is primarily asynchronous but efficient.
